Destination Loch Goil

If you are hunting for the ideal holiday location in Scotland then Loch Goil with its villages of Lochgoilhead and Carrick Castle is an ideal choice. It really is the perfect location for anyone looking to get away from it all, without spending hours driving ever northwards.

Loch Goil is a unique holiday destination. When you are here it feels like you are a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of the city, indeed the peace, tranquillity and unspoilt views could easily trick you into believing you were many hours away from civilisation. In reality you are just over an hour from the vibrant city of Glasgow and within the glen you have a plethora of facilities to suit all your holiday needs.

Loch Goil is a fjord-like sea loch surrounded by mountains and the forests of the Argyll Forest Park. While it is located within the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park it is still an undiscovered gem for many visitors to the park.

At the head of the loch you find the pretty village of Lochgoilhead with its post office and village store, friendly pubs, inns Lochgoilhead Villageand activity centres.

The village has been a popular holiday destination for a long time and in years gone by holiday makers journeyed to their holiday houses in Lochgoilhead via steamer from the Clyde river.

Today the village still has a mixture of permanent and holiday homes as well as the the leisure village of Drimsynie next to the village. Drimsynie has a range of facilities including a golf course, indoor bowling, swimming pool, children’s play area and bar / restaurant. Here you will also find a small supermarket and laundrette.

Drive further along the loch and you find the village of Carrick Castle, named after the 15th century tower house that guards the shore line.
Carrick Castle
When you stay at Carrick you immediately notice the absence of noise. With no through road the usual background hum of traffic is non existent, instead you hear only the lapping of the waves on the shore and cries of sea birds.

Instead of buses and trains you may spot one of the loch’s seals or if you are really fortunate an otter. Whether you like to potter along the shoreline or hike off into the hills you will notice the sparklingly clean air and how refreshed it makes you feel.

All around you are magnificent hills and mountains, sometimes snow capped or adorned with waterfalls and during the summer cloaked in the deep green of the Argyll Forest Park.

Space and Time with family and friends

What our Guests Say….

Our guests often tell us how much they have enjoyed the different rooms in this spacious holiday home. This guest comment from earlier this year sum them up:

“Thanks again for a brilliant week at Rhumhor; we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
The house was perfect for all our differing needs, from our son at the age of 10 loved the wii (and the pool table) to my Dad who spent his quiet moments practising pool so he stood at least some chance at the nightly family pool tournament!
My sister loved ‘her’ turret bedroom; our other son at the age of 13, enjoyed his own space in the ‘quirky’ single room; my Mum, the quiet of the drawing room and my favourite spot was on the half landing.
Everybody was happy and the views were just perfect.
Rhumhor is definitely ‘food for the soul!’”

Rhumhor

Of course Scotland, being such a green and beautiful country, does experience its fair share of wet weather, so it really helps when you are away as part of a larger group to have the space for everyone to be able to enjoy themselves indoors.

The large family room, with its comfortable Chesterfields, TV & DVD and Wii is a popular place for everyone to gather. While others enjoy the drawing room with its big comfy sofas, stunning views of Loch Goil and log burner. The half landing attracts those who like to sit and read or perhaps catch up with the on-line world on their tablet or smart phone using the free wi-fi.

Board Games Drawing RoomOf course on a holiday or short break you can’t beat some time together playing a good board game. In the family room we have always had some of the more traditional games; chess & chequers and trivial pursuits as well as some more ‘hi-tech’ Wii family games. This autumn we’ve added some more modern ‘low tech’ games in the drawing room.

We know it’s the little things that count on holiday and we are always thinking of things we can add to the house to make our guests stay extra special and ensure they feel like they are home-from-home.

Pine Marten at Rhumhor

We were very excited to finally capture on film this evening our elusive visitor, the pine marten.  We have known for some time that a pine marten has been frequenting the gardens at Rhumhor but had not seen one before for more than an instant.  Looking out at the back garden early this evening we saw him (or her) trotting across the lawn, pausing, running back to the trees and then finally going on his way.  It was a fantastic chance to get the camera out and take a photo.

The pine marten was once found throughout Britain. However the species is particularly susceptible to persecution and, in the 19th century, it suffered one of the most dramatic declines of any UK mammal.  Fortunately the pine martens held on in north west Scotland, and now with protected status, their numbers are increasing.

The pine marten is definitely one of the most striking of our wildlife visitors and we aim to encourage them to visit Rhumhor’s gardens regularly so that our guests will also have the opportunity to spot this beautiful creature during their stay on Loch Goil.

Watching Wildlife – In and around Loch Goil, Argyll and the Loch Lomond National Park

On the west coast of Scotland we are fortunate to have habitats suitable for some stunning wildlife.  If you are in the UK you may have watched the recent BBC programme “Wild Cameramen at Work” which featured Argyll and highlighted some of the amazing creatures on land, sea and in the air that can be seen.

Scotland is one of the last strongholds of the red squirrel and the Argyll Forest park which surrounds Loch Goil is home to this fascinating and cute little mammal.   On the Loch we have a seal colony and porpoises are often spotted on the hunt for fish.   These are just a few examples of wildlife in this area and we have added a page on wildlife around Loch Goil, Argyll and the Loch Lomond National Park to our website which shows you just some of the birds and animals you may see.

Whether you are staying in Scotland for week or just a short break it can enhance your stay if you see our native wildlife .  There is no guarantee that you will spot specific birds or animals however it does help if you know the best places to go and the ideal conditions for wildlife spotting so we are adding a new section to the house information guide especially for our guests.  It offers hints and tips from our own experience and from previous guests and we hope future guests will add their advice.

2013 is The Year of Natural Scotland, so what better time to book a stay at Rhumhor Holiday Lodge and come and see the very best of nature for yourself?
